The Tomb of Ligeia (1964/65 UK)

filmAh, those pesky British tea breaks. They drove director Roger Corman up the wall. Why can’t the Yanks understand the Brits love their cuppa, even if they are a film crew working on a set for an exploitation director from Wherever USA.  Instead of taking 15 days to shoot this tepid horror tale, it took 25. Oh, the humanity! We’re lucky a third Anglo – American War didn’t break out. The second one was over tea as well. Tea is an important theme to this blog. If I believe in anything with a religious fervour, its tea. So Mr Corman can take a running jump! [Read more…]

Eye Of The Cat (1969 USA)

eye LCSan Francisco is a great setting for any film, especially when it was made in the hippie era. This Hitchcockian (written by Joseph “Psycho” Stefano) horror tale is something of a little gem. A hugely enjoyable romp, coming across as sophisticated and hip, featuring some scary and horrific moments, but also blessed with some wickedly funny black humour. [Read more…]

That Darn Cat! (1965 USA)

disneyWhy not a review for our inner child? A classic Disney mix of conservatism and hopelessly virginal good humour, this still hooks its audience with a flair for clean, corny vignettes. An attempt to bring the girlish Haley Mills into a womanly – if comedic – grace. Her voice does grate on me after a while though and her personality is annoying. (I am not pleased to find out I share a birthday with miss goody two shoes either) [Read more…]

THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE (1973 UK)

catOn a first watch this is a very unsettling motion picture. The synthesized ‘score’ just creeps me to the bone every time, very effective, much more than straight music would have been; totally ahead of its time. It feels like some kind of un-natural percussion is performing drum fills inside my stomach. Yikes! [Read more…]
