About the Author

crimsoncult8bigWelcome to my (mostly) retro blog dedicated mostly to nostalgia and entertainment. Book, Film and Television reviews have been the focus so far. My cinema and TV preference is usually from the 1950s/60s/70s or 80s with a leaning towards suspense/horror/adventure and fantasy. Pure romance or real life “kitchen sink” dramas I’m not so keen on. The only thing 21st century about my tastes is a liking for cartoon comedy. I may even write about political/racial/historical/music/gossip type things if and when the mood takes me.

The tone of some of my posts can be quite extreme. I have a boyish sense of the surreal or whimsical and this might startle some readers. Sometimes I can be quite bitter and nasty too. I try to stay respectable for most book reviews. With more visual posts I may throw in outrageous opinions and silly humour. As time has gone on these things may overlap, harsh condemnation or ludicrous comments may be anywhere. The amount of nudity has gradually risen too as my viewer stats go up when these images accompany the text of a film review.

My preference in authors is heavily weighted in the past too, and also favours escapism. I have a particular fondness for European fiction from the Victorian/Edwardian period, as personified in Jules Verne, Somerset Maugham and M.R. James to name but three. I also have a preference for America’s golden age of pulp fiction: Raymond Chandler, Robert Bloch and Richard Matheson. These lists could go on to include more recent authors such as Anne Rice and Rebecca Tope. I know everyone’s time is precious so… Thank you for looking.
