The Stand (Stephen King)

the_stand_journal_2No, not the ‘uncut’ one, but the original. 823 pages was enough for me, I don’t need another 377 or whatever the new one clocks in at. Anyway, The Stand is not a flawless novel by any means. The ease with which the overwhelming majority of the survivors seem to get over the loss of loved ones, and society in general, is a tad too easy. [Read more…]

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (audio book read by Jim Dale)

LISTENINGLIBRARYAroundTheWorldInEightyDays500Jim Dale is a fabulous narrator, giving each character a distinct voice which lends even more colour to this already colourful story. It is amazing how the use of special effect sounds and the right kind of music can conjure up the scenes in my mind. What a versatile voice! There is no dull monotone here, no character beyond his vocal range. [Read more…]

THE MISFITS (1961 United States)

Marilyn-Monroe-on-the-set-of-The-Misfits-3On one hand we have the female sex symbol of them all giving her all – on the other side of the ledger  – we have a man named Gay. And he was the biggest male sex symbol of his era, an era where rugged men were called… Gay. And to think Montgomery Clift was in this too but he was lucky enough to be named Perce. [Read more…]

LIVE AND LET DIE (Ian Fleming)

a045c6354116a6a3d907c46f16fa055cThe second James Bond novel  established the format in ways that were largely followed in the films also: Bond is briefed by M about an enemy agent (in this case, Mr Big) and sent abroad to break the SMERSH operation. In the course of this New York – Florida – Jamaican adventure, Bond encounters an assortment of villains, henchmen and beautiful women. [Read more…]

THE MAN WHO HAUNTED HIMSELF (1970 Britain)

003-dangerous-driving-1024x597Three years before his 007 tour of duty, Roger Moore portrayed a spiritually distressed businessman in this modestly creepy thriller. Even the script is suffering from schizophrenic problems. Is it a supernatural horror? Don’t ask me. Before you can say ‘doppelgänger’, Moore gets so confused he doesn’t know whether he’s Arthur or Martha. Or James. [Read more…]

DR NO (Britain 1962)

qiiZK2WbtupSSq9TaM57ZtnYH4nIn the beginning was the word and the word was Bond. Here is the genesis of cinematic style over substance. “Dr. No” is incredibly dated but it has a unique, naive quality. There’s no tongue-in-cheek self-awareness here, this is the first glimpse that audiences had of all the different themes that would develop in the series. [Read more…]

THE FAMILY WAY (1966 Britain)

the-family-way-1966-hayley-mills-16x9-widescreen-54d8dArthur (Hwyel Bennett) and Jenny (Hayley Mills) are like any other newlyweds who probably just like to have some privacy. To get their freak off I suppose, but they can’t seem to get the deed done, as they are constantly under the eye of family, friends, especially Arthur’s father, Ezra (John Mills). Not the sort of aphrodisiac a young chap was hoping for… [Read more…]

ROBIN HOOD (1973 United States)

Prince-john-moneySuch an underrated Disney classic, one of the company’s top ten best. A wonderful motion picture for children, young and old. I love this film because its about kindness, fun, defending, escaping, disguising, being mean and romantic –  I also like all the characters, even the nasty ones. [Read more…]

GONE WITH THE WIND (United States 1939)

gone-with-the-wind-poster-at-taraI’m impressed with how this can hold the attention of a viewer 76 years on. GWTW has taken a beating from film critics and historians alike. The characters are often described as cardboard-ish; portions of the film are described as excessively melodramatic; some of the special effects (most notably the film’s occasional use of rear-view projections) have dated. [Read more…]

A DEFINITION OF GOD (Peter Deunov 1864 -1944)

b3bfba3ed771efddb9cc6ec5dd7999ecMy 150th post, (not really – about 25 have been deleted so I would have reached this point some time ago) and here are some inspiring words about the author of our life and universe from a spiritual giant. He was the founder of The White Brotherhood movement, based in Bulgaria, whose message has spread throughout the world. [Read more…]
