A NEW EARTH (Eckhart Tolle)

7147973-LLets come back down to earth with some sobering quotes from Mr Tolle. I didn’t feel like trying to sum this book up because it would mean a few hours keyboard work. I’ll just let the quiet German author’s words speak for himself.

His works are so peaceful and still…not sure how much of it is true though so I will add bits on.

“Words reduce reality to something the human mind can grasp, which isn’t very much.”  Have to disagree with this one if it was to include the definition of poetry…and it doesn’t say much for our blogs either. Are we all just wasting our time, Mr Eckhart?

“You have so much to learn from your enemies.”  This is a painful way to learn though.

“Anything that you resent and strongly react to in another is also in you.” More bad news.

“Don’t let a mad world tell you that success is anything other than a successful present moment.” Uh-uh…

“Can you look without the voice in your head commenting, drawing conclusions, comparing, or trying to figure something out?”   Sometimes

“To recognize one’s own insanity is, of course, the arising of sanity, the beginning of healing and transcendence…You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are.”   No comment

“When you don’t cover up the world with words and labels, a sense of the miraculous returns to your life that was lost a long time ago when humanity, instead of using thought, became possessed by thought.”  Quick. Call for the exorcist!

“All true artists, whether they know it or not, create from a place of no-mind, from inner stillness.”  Must be true. You try composing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at your local branch of KFC while they are holding their monthly hip-hop convention.

“You are not IN the universe, you ARE the universe, an intrinsic part of it. Ultimately you are not a person, but a focal point where the universe is becoming conscious of itself. What an amazing miracle.”   Say this at a job interview or declare this piece of wisdom to the boss before asking for a pay rise.

“A significant portion of the earth’s population will soon recognize, if they haven’t already done so, that humanity is now faced with a stark choice: Evolve or die.” While there’s life there’s hope.

“If uncertainty is unacceptable to you, it turns into fear. If it is perfectly acceptable, it turns into increased aliveness, alertness, and creativity.” Sounds reasonable.

“Life isn’t as serious as my mind makes it out to be.”   Yeah but our minds still rule us and you won’t be thinking this the next time you are caught up in an armed robbery at your local bank.

“ There are two ways of being unhappy. Not getting what you want is one. Getting what you want is the other.” Nothing new here, Oscar Wilde said the same thing in the 19th century.

“This is my secret,” he said. “I don’t mind what happens.”  Good for you.

  1. Bwahahaha! Excellent commentary! The King of the Hill pictures really helped illustrate the point too. I’d love to see you do this with further sets of philosophical quotes too! 🙂
