Book Tag: Reading Habits Tag

I have been tagged by Dr Babus from the wonderful blog ajoobacats to answer the following questions.

Do you have a certain place at home for reading?  The lazy boy chair beside my bed. If the sun is out then I might use the wooden seats in the back garden.

Bookmark or random piece of paper? Piece of paper most of the time. If the book is very thick and sturdy then I might look for a bookmark. Some books are so frail that a bookmark can stretch the binding.

Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/a certain amount of pages? If I read for a certain length of time a persistent headache forces me to stop. No longer than two hours. If I noticed that I’d hit the 300 page mark in one session I’d stop. That is like over eating for the brain.

Do you eat or drink while reading? With fiction never but my inner slob comes out when I’m eye balling facts (non-fiction). Tea and cake, chocolate and crispy snacks. You name it and I’d eat it with a really juicy biography or dramatic factual events from history.

Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?  My attention needs plenty of silence, or the next best thing available. Quiet music of my choice may be on in the back ground, but not the TV. Too distracting.

One book at a time or several at once? Different collections of short stories yes, with non-fiction I can have four on the go at once. But I wouldn’t take on two novels at once. I can’t absorb them both simultaneously.(hope that didn’t sound rude)

Reading at home or everywhere? At home 99 % of the time. I’ve tried reading on the bus and it doesn’t work for me. There is something about the presence of strangers which pulls my attention away from the printed page.

Reading out loud or silently in your head? I have never read out loud to myself. If the going gets tough in a boring novel or short story I have resorted to lip-reading because it was getting harder to comprehend what was going on. My mind is supposed to do the work but sometimes it needs help.

Do you read ahead or even skip pages?  If I’m serious about losing myself in that particular story, no! If I think I’m not going to make it to the end because of bad writing, yes!

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new? I don’t like breaking spines–ever. Why can’t they make indestructible books? I keep my books looking as near to new as possible.

Do you write in your books? Never. Tattooing another’s private work with my personal graffiti doesn’t appeal.

  1. Great answers!
I had never considered reading fiction and non fiction might lead to different habits.
